Beginner Spearfishing
For those interested in learning the fundamentals of spearfishing, we offer a beginner course which covers everything you’ll need to know to get in the water and harvest your dinner, safely and selectively from the source.
This is the only spearfishing course taught in Melbourne that includes both theory and a guided spearfishing session - so you can learn and practice the skills required to dive safely under expert guidance.

Loading/unloading a speargun
Duck diving with a speargun
Shooting a speargun
Spearfishing safety considerations
Buddy System procedures for spearfishing
Fish Identification and ethics of spearfishing
Dive planning, including how to read and interpret conditions
Hunting styles and techniques for specific species
Equipment care
Debriefing and record keeping
WHAT TO BRING
Fins, mask and snorkel
Wetsuit appropriate for the conditions, including gloves.
Weight and weight belt (can be provided if you do not own these)
Speargun, dive knife, float-line, float and catch bag
PREREQUISITES
Students should have basic swimming skills and be able to swim 200m without stopping.
Students should be over 18 years of age, or have parent/guardian's approval if between 16 and 18 years of age.
Basic freediving ability is desirable, including the ability to equalise and dive to 10m.
We have a limited range of 2 piece 5mm wetsuits available for hire as well as other equipment you might need for your course. We can run courses on alternative dates if we have 2 or more people confirmed.
